JoeVal –
This refrigerator failed after about one week. It just stopped working for no apparent reason. I contacted Whynter and they said they would repair it if I shipped it back to them. But here is the rub…I have to box it up myself according to the commercial packing standards they sent me (so many inches of packing material around the unit, so many inches of space between the unit and the box, etc.) This is an approx 300 pound appliance. It is a full sized refrigerator. Whynter wants me to lift this unit, put it into a box, and ship it back to them to fix. I cannot lift this into a box. It is way too big and bulky for a consumer to handle. Imagine physically trying to lift a refrigerator into a 5 or 6 foot tall cardboard box. This company refuses to fix it otherwise. I have been arguing with them about this for 6 months (6 MONTHS!) and the company will not assist otherwise. The unit is still broken in my kitchen 6 months later. Bottom line: It is unreasonable to expect a consumer to pack a 300 pound appliance. If you buy any large appliance from Whynter and the product fails, Whynter will not send a repair person to fix it. You will have to find a way to lift, pack, and ship the refrigerator to them in order to have the item repaired. Its not worth the risk to buy from this manufacturer. As far as I can tell, any other appliance manufacturer would accommodate a repair. Everyone I have talked to thinks their policy is crazy (even all the people at Best Buy). Whynter will not send a repairman. It is not worth the risk to buy from Whynter given their consumer unfriendly warranty. Learn from my misfortune and avoid this company. Tell other to avoid them as well.
ALSO NOTE: I purchased a geek squad extended warranty on this item. Once Whynter refused to send a repairman or come to pick up the unit, I called Geek Squad. Because the unit is still under the manufacturer warranty, they will not fix it either.
