I purchased the Sennheiser – 5.1.4-Channel AMBEO Soundbar | Max with Dolby Atmos/DTS:X – Black to watch movies, tv, and for karaoke. It’s sounds good for a sound bar, but doesn’t compare to regular stereo speakers.
Sean –
This soundbar has really impressed me with the sound quality and immersion. I bought it to replace my aging surround sound system which consisted of a receiver and a 7.1 speaker setup. I choose the Ambeo Max cause I wanted something which could truly fill the room with sound, and so far I’ve been very happy with switch.
It really does sound awesome. The Ambeo effect, which is customizable, is really cool and is especially impressive when watching Atmos content. I would say compared with my old setup, this sounds more cohesive – more like an overall soundfield rather than sound coming from a series of distinct speakers. I appreciate that it can do this by itself, without multiple separate speakers.
Regarding bass: I have been happy with the level of bass and bass response in music, movies, and games. I love that it has an output for a sub – I still have my old dedicated sub and I’ll probably end up hooking it up to see the difference. I would say try it without a sub to see how you like it, if you think you need more bass, you can always add one later.
One small thing I like is the little screen in the front. Much easier to read when changing inputs or sound mode than a series of dots or something behind a mesh.
Right now I have my Xbox Series X plugged into the Soundbar, then the soundbar to the TV. The TV and Xbox say it’s passing through 4K HDR and Dolby Vision.
Setup was a bit tricky/wonky at first between with the app and is probably the only con. I plugged the soundbar into a lan internet connection and that helped it to pull down the update. After that it’s connectivity has worked great. I’ll also mention that with my 2017 TV (arc, not earc) I sometimes have to be careful in the order in which devices are turned on/off otherwise there won’t be any sound/picture. Also, this is a big, heavy unit. Make sure you have space for it and possibly some help maneuvering it into place. Temporarily I’ve placed my TV stand legs on 2x4s to lift it up, in the future I will wall mount the TV.

A nice sounding system, but I do appreciate a subwoofer to accentuate action scenes and explosions. I return this to get the Dolby Atmos Samsung surround system for my Q 90 A Samsung TV an awesome team they are.
NikitaR –
Firs of all a got open box unit for $1700. Once I bought this peace and brought it home I was excited because I own the Bose SoundTouch 300 + sub and would like to compare. First issue came is I could not connect to Wi-Fi. The sound bar found network but would not accept a password… I figured an update is required. Manually updated software through USB. Finally it works!!! After calibration – my boy – sound quality is awesome! Atmos rocks!!!( used laptop with Dolby Access app). Base – subwoofer is a must! I found that unit has weak Bluetooth coverage compare to Bose unit.
Will test more when SVS SB3000 arrived).
MichaelK –
Pretty incredible sound bar you will prolly want to add a sub for the full sound experience. The 360 sound is pretty impressive
YesSir –
If you want to avoid hanging speakers on your tall ceilings I highly recommend this sound bar! You get the full emmersion of surround sound right here!
Ambeo –
This sound bar is incredible! Sounds great! Lots of volume and clarity. Ambeo is fairly good for 3D audio processing. And this is coming from someone who is using DIRAC in their vehicle and their main home theater room. You will need a separate sub for this soundbar. Yes, this will not be a replacement for AVR home theater set-ups. We use this soundbar in the bedroom paired with a REL T5/X 8 inch woofer. If I had buy the sub over again, I would use a SVS 3000 mini. Keep in mind that this sound bar is not going to really give you true 5.1.4, but it does an outstanding job of trying to do it. So if space is a limiting factor for choosing this over a true AVR experience, this would be the one to get!
DJB2022 –
Im now hearing beautful sounds I’ve never heard from my past surround system! Less wires but the hookup can be a little tricky especially the optical cable. But the sound is well worth it. I love, love, love it!
Nitin –
Replaced with B&W Panaroma I with this and I was completely blown away. I did lot of research before buying this Soundbar. If you are in the market for a premium Soundbar, look no further.
PS Has inbuilt subwoofer but external subwoofer definitely helps
PeoplesSocialWorker1 –
The sound is amazing! Doubt you’ll be disappointed. As with any other soundbar, you’ll need to run subs. I’m running dual SVS PB 4000s… neighborhood can hear what I’m listening to and no regrets. It does get hot after a couple hours. I have a small fan to keep it cool. No regrets here!
KDSPA –
This product is a beast in more ways than one. At 40 pounds, it’s really a two person job to lift it up any sort of shelf. While connecting the wiring is simple, the process of room calibration and getting the device’s firmware to update is not. I was (and still am) unable to connect the Ambeo Max to my home wi-fi network. That meant that I couldn’t update the device pre-use which meant that I wouldn’t be able to use the (very helpful) Sennheiser Sound Control app. Fortunately I had an option to use a run of Cat 6 cable to hard wire it into my router and that eventually solved my problems. However, getting that done involved a 90-minute call with a very knowledgeable (and patient) Sennheiser tech support person to sort out the issues. Everything worked out in the end, but I spent a couple of frustrating days getting there. That’s the only reason I’m giving the product 4 stars instead of five. This simply shouldn’t be happening with a product at this price level.
As for sound, it is head and shoulders above any other soundbar based system I’ve ever heard. Out of the box it does have the characteristic Sennheiser sound signature—“warm” with a rolled-off top end. However, if that’s not to your taste, you can adjust any or all of the six presets built into the remote to something more to your liking.
While device does go quite deep on bass, I found that I needed to hook up a Klipsch wired subwoofer I already owned to get a true movie theatre-like experience. With that in place, the result when playing an effect-heavy movie like “Top Gun Maverick” is pretty spectacular. The unit will reveal any defects in the audio tracks of the source material played through it. There is a big difference in sound quality between content playing in two-channel stereo and content using more modern codecs like Dolby Atmos. I’m not sure this soundbar would beat a perfectly set up five/seven/ten discrete speaker high end home theatre system, but it gives a good account with a wide soundstage and convincing separation between sound elements. If you are streaming video content from various platforms, be sure to check your settings to use the maximum possible bandwidth, otherwise the Ambeo won’t be able to perform at its highest level.
Music also works well through this soundbar, although the best overall sound profile will probably be a bit different than the one for video content. Once again, customizing the “Music” preset on the remote control can address this issue.
Overall, the Ambeo Max is a technological triumph—once it is correctly set up. Do your homework in advance about the steps involved and be prepared to put some time into getting the unit configured properly. It can be a frustrating process initially, but the end result is well worth the effort.

It’s a very good soundbar that would be absolutely stellar with two wireless rear atmos surrounds. Yes, even this soundbar still needs those.
DanielR –
Better with a dedicated subwoofer and a aftermarket hdmi
JosephW –
Stupendous sound quality. I’m loving it. Definitely would recommend it.

This soundbar shakes my house!!!! And I love it!! I would buy it even for the price (well spent!!)
Smartguy –
THIS THING SOUNDS AMAZING! I can’t believe the sound that come out of this thing! It is plenty loud, has great bass, fills the room with sound, and is easy to set up. It sounds better than a lot of wired 5.1.4 and 7.2.4 setups I’ve heard. A little on the pricey side…..but you get what you pay for!!
KurtB –
If you’re in need of a sound at due to space, or just want something for the bedroom, nothing beats this. The clarity and ability to hear talking, even at low volumes, is stunning.
WillieC –
Disappointed on the effects in a small room. Great power and quality sound. Limited access to adjustments. I was looking for a bigger effect for the price.
AndrewP –
Excellent product. Excels in so many ways–sound quality, ability to adjust for different programming. Very pleased.
Kadeem111 –
5⭐️ soundbar. The problem is connecting and I still have issues connecting. The sound is really good and pure but I had to have geek squad connect my soundbar because I couldn’t get the job done
BrianR –
The Ambeo soundbar is a big heavy looking speaker. However, the upward firing speakers didn’t perform as advertised, but the speaker did get loud simply because of its bulk. Also, the Ambeo sub only would connect with Apple tv. The sub was virtually silent with only a slight murmur. And Sennheiser customer service is a joke. We subsequently bought a Sonos arc and sub and are way happier
JoeB –
Excellent clarity. Simple setup. App very useful to switch sound settings from movie to sports to music.
Juan –
Is an amazingly immersive quality to the audio,The Sennheiser AMBEO Soundbar MAX is a 5.1.4 setup with 13 speakers that delivers an impressive immersive experience for a standalone bar and you can add subwoofer for premium sound system. Excellent the best.
KyleG –
Fantastic soundstage especially with Atmos programs. Very easy setup. I did add an SVS SB-1000 to help give punch in the low end even though it is full sounding on its own.
vinsanity1082 –
I absolutely loved this sound bar and purchased at seventeen hundred dollars. It filled my living room, measuring 30′ x 15′, and the sound was so crisp. Dialogue had never sounded better. Music sounded amazing. I didn’t quite get the consistent surround sound effect when watching action movies.
Ultimately I returned this because of the overall aesthetic, or lack thereof, of the sound bar. It was the combination of overall size, bulk, and lack of styling that made it unappealing to look at. I would have gladly paid the price since the quality was top notch and the sound produced was a dream. But in the end, I needed it to be pleasing to the eye as well, and this was just kinda monolithic.
Maybe I will come back to this for a dedicated movie/gaming room, but in our nice living room it just felt like an eyesore. Which was a shame.
WilliamG –
BEST SOUNDBAR I HAVE EVER PURCHASED. VERY HEAVY AND LOOKS GREAT.
CarlH –
Exceptional Quality… This is by far the BEST SOUNDBAR I have ever experienced‼️ Sennheiser is in a league of its own because there is no competition.
The highs are beautifully replicated
True voice sounds like the characters are in your room with you
The lows are amazing … no sub necessary unless you are creating a theater room
If you are looking for a Sound Bar listen to this one first and I assure you that you will keep coming back to this one
AlexandreK –
The sound is very natural, contrary to all other soundbar I tested in my media room – including Amber Plus, Arc. It is th only soundbar that provided a clear hint (not more than that) of 5.1.2 sound. I believe it is because it is the only soundbar I know that uses a real mic for calibration. I would keep it but: after I upgraded the software it stopped connecting to my eras LG TV. So, for all purrposes it did not work. Perhaps, I just could use HDMI in in it from eArc TV, but did not try and not sure if it could work. Negative: it is really large and really heavy 0 you need space and 2 people to move it to install.
Awesome –
Love this Soundbar no clutters all in one just perfect
JoeyS –
Amazing sound you won’t believe comes from just one sound bar. Technology has come a long way and this sound bad gives you the illusion that you have a whole multi speaker set up . Once paired with a sub it just takes it to another level . I just wished you could add rears. If they ever do that then nothing will come close.
Amatuer –
This high end ound bar is impressive. Easy to use and set up. I wish it came with the mounting bracket. Sound is amazing and pleasing to the ears. This is a reward to all who love excellent sound and use a sound bar.

This thing is an absolute beast. Very intuitive setup and easy to use. Fantastic sound. Just make sure you have the space for it because it is huge and heavy.

I read as many reviews as I could find on this soundbar before I purchased the AMBEO Max. The AMBIO Max seemed to meet my needs (minimizing my sound system footprint to a bar and wall mounted TV). The bar comes very well packaged and is easy to set up and connect to your TV. Once calibrated, the sound is incredible and fills my family room with the Atmos surround sound tracks from our favorite movies. I recommend the subwoofer to fill in the lower end for the movie soundtracks. The sound fills the room with a sweet spot in the center of the room as you would expect for a surround system. I bit on the pricey end of the soundbar market but well worth the investment.
ScottM –
While the sound quality is ok, the set up and daily operations of this sound bar, while connected to a state-of-the-art TV is very frustrating. The directions and support on the Sound bar are minimal, and we are still having issues with the sound bar self selecting the audio components itself causing us to go through a lengthy process to return the settings to what we want. Very frustrating.
sandduner58 –
This is by far the best soundbar i have ever purchased. Yes the $2500.00 price is a lot but in this case you get what you pay for. I did connect an SVS PB-12plus subwoofer to it and the base was impressive. However one day I disconnected the subwoofer and ran the subwoofer by itself. I adjusted the EQ via the app and i can’t believe just how much base the 4” woofers put out. The base response is awesome. I have used subwoofers on all my home theater systems for over 30 years but no more. I hace owned several over the years and all required a subwoofer but not this one. If yout an audiophile like me then i highly recommend the Ambeo 5.1.4 soundbar. Run the room calibration then setup the EQ using the app and enjoy, you won’t regret it.
LarryS –
Most amazing sound. Love the base.
Listen to music day and night..no need for a TV anymore.
ENSO –
Amazing! We have it in the living room area and the potential of this speaker is astonishing. Highly recommend.
MaLO –
Sound quality is great, fills the space evenly. Listening to music is hit or miss depending on the song with ambeo on ( I listen to edm mostly)

I felt compelled to review this product after using it for a year and having constant issues with it. First off when this soundbar is functioning properly it’s capable of producing very impressive sound and a nice soundstage. The first time I played a movie with the Ambeo setting on I smiled because it was throwing sounds all over my living room as it’s intended to do with it’s side and up-firing speakers which created a pleasant surround sound experience. I will also say that you absolutely need to add a separate nice subwoofer to complete the surround sound experience which I already had so it worked out well.
Here are the not so great aspects of this soundbar…It has a common issue that Sennheiser calls “Thermal Flex”. Thermal Flex occurs when the soundbar starts to heat up and the plastic it used in the materials start to expand and makes a crackling noise. This noise doesn’t come from the speakers but from the housing unit itself, specifically in top right rear corner where the most heat is dispensed through the plastic vent. The noise is not constant and you probably won’t notice it if you’re playing something at a moderate to loud volume but when it gets quieter in a scene or the volume isn’t as high you will definitely notice it. You can find several mentions of this problem in reviews and on forums. I contacted Sennheiser Customer Service after about 8 months and that’s when the real frustration began. Their customer support is by far the worst and most incompetent I’ve ever dealt with. First, if you email them you can expect to wait about a week for a response. Second, you get multiple different people telling you the same thing the last person told you a week before so you have to refer them to your last email. I did everything they asked of me including making sure the soundbar was spaced the correct distance from other devices to ensure properly air flow and ventilation. One of their responses was to put a fan back there to help keep this couple thousand dollar soundbar cool…lol After months I was able to get them to service it so I sent it in via UPS and it arrived at their service center where it stayed for 7 weeks. I wasn’t able to get any updates during that time and finally I called and left a message and the soundbar just happened to ship out the next day. Once I got it back there was a note inside that said “Bench tested for a week and couldn’t find any problems”. LOL If you only tested for a week, why did it take 7 weeks for me to get it back?!? Of course once I got it back, hooked it up and turned it on the same sounds started up again. Then after all that they asked me about my cables and told me to do a reset which is ridiculous because again, the noise doesn’t come from the speakers, it comes from the plastic getting extremely hot which is a common issue with this model.
Lastly I’ll touch on the app…You need the app to customize sound settings which is fine but the app rarely works. It constantly can’t find the soundbar and you have to delete the app and start all over. They also just sent another update on the app and now your custom EQ settings don’t save every time you exit the app.
Unfortunately the negatives outweigh the positives with this soundbar and given it’s high price point I’m extremely disappointed in this purchase and I’m stuck with a very expensive soundbar that makes crackling noises. I would recommend that you look elsewhere when it comes to high end soundbars.

It’s the best it has great sound and it’s all in one amazing unit
CharlesB –
Great sound. Hugh improvement over factory TV speakers.
AbayomiA –
This is a powerful speaker but it cut out on and off. It just goes mute for few seconds every 5minutes or so. I told my husband to return it but because it is a very heavy speaker, it’s hard to return.
We bought this at $2499 and added 4years geek squad coverage, spending over $2800 in total.
Dave –
This soundbar is absolute amazing. As a stand alone soundbar, it has no equals. I just got this soundbar during a Black Friday deal. I connected it to my TV and added my Polk Subwoofer. This thing sounds absolutely amazing. The voice is amazingly clear. This soundbar has amazing bass and surround sound. The Subwoofer added an extra kick. I highly recommend this product. It totally feels the room with amazing sound.
Great –
The best sound quality, easy to install, fast delivery
Jaisent –
The sound quality of the sound bar downgraded terribly less than a year after I bought it in December 2019. The voices are inaudible when Ambeo is turned on, and this is a known hardware defect. Sennheiser does not handle this product anymore, Sunnova does, and the support is terrible. The $2500 unit just sits on the wall, unusable.
After I bought it, we dealt with Covid, I’ve had two kids and a bout with cancer, so I am just now trying to get something resolved.
There’s no other way to contact support than through email, and they ignore their emails — never reply back.
It was a great unit when it worked, but due to known hardware defects and lack of support — it gets one star. Unacceptable for the second most expensive soundbar on the market.
TravisS –
This is a piece of junk. The soundbar is connected via eArc where the tv should control it – worked fine for 4 months, doesn’t work now. The tv also stopped playing volume through it. Check the forums – many users are experiencing the same issue. Stay clear – the customer service for Sennheiser is also non existent. Buy a brand that has support and tons of users aren’t experiencing a sound bar that has no sound and no service.
Narushima –
Best soundbar by far, i was looking for an all in one solution. And not have 15 different speakers in walls and such, this gets the job done and more. If you can catch it on sale dont think twice!
JamesS –
I’ve had the AMBEO for about two years, and I wanted to get my thoughts out in a review. This thing rocks, but has some serious annoyances.
First, the pros:
Sound quality – I’m not an audiophile, so I’m not gonna quantify this with words. However, the sound is excellent, and brings my games/movies/music to life.
Bass – The bass is strong with this one. Is it inferior to a standalone subwoofer? Yes. However, you have the choice of adding one if you prefer. I live in a condo, so I kept it subwoofer free for my neighbor’s sanity.
Size – I know it’s one massive 40 pound bar, but it’s still way smaller/cleaner than a traditional surround sound system. It goes a long way in keeping your entertainment area clutter free.
Mixed:
The AMBEO effect – The surround sound effect does work, but you need a perfect room with rectangular walls to receive the full effect. For example, my living space has a flat wall on the right, so the surround sound is absolutely UNCANNY there. The left, though, extends off into a kitchen/dining area. Not as many perpendicular walls for the audio to bounce off, so the effect is weaker and more diluted on that side. Definitely think about your room setup before you buy this. It can be the difference between an excellent experience VS a poor one.
Cons:
Jank – I’ve had this soundbar freeze on me, to the point that I can’t even power it off and on. Only way to fix it is with a power cycle. Happens once a month, just enough to be a nuisance.
Wi-fi reliability – every 3-4 months, this thing will disconnect from my home network and refuse to reconnect. Sometimes a simple router/soundbar reset will fix it, sometimes I really need to go digging. If that’s the case, it’s a 30-45 minute experience in frustration.
Reliance on app – 80% of the functionality of the soundbar, including fine-tuning the audio and most soundbar settings, is built into the app. Therefore when the wifi breaks or the app glitches out, the show stops until you can get it working again.
Final verdict:
Solid hardware, but lots of bugs and jank and connectivity issues that makes it painfully obvious that this thing has teething issues. Frankly, I’ve owned it for 2 years, and even after multiple firmware updates, these problems still occur.
Without any software issues, this soundbar is tremendous. It’s worth the asking price. However, we don’t live in that world. I’d still recommend this AMBEO, but only after a deep, DEEP discount.

Glad we made this purchase Along with the added sub woofer. It is a real treat watching movie theater quality sound in the comfort of your home. Thank you Best Buy for offering quality products! Next Level
