  1. Skydogvid

The quality of the camera picture is great, even at night but it does have its shortcomings.
My install is in a cargo van and it doesn’t automatically come on when backing up which isn’t a problem because you just touch the camera icon on the screen and it tries to pop up. Most of the time the video feed isn’t instant so you either wait until it loads or start backing without it.
Since it is using a wireless connection there is a little bit of a lag in the video so go slow when backing up to a pole or something so the video can keep up.
No regrets on my purchase, it does what I need it to do and was easy to hookup. No wires..

  2. Tony

I was planning on installing the BC-30, but it would have been difficult on a Tahoe because the reverse light are so far from the license plate and access is not easy. So I bought the BC-40 and it works fine. The camera can see in the dark well with only the reverse lights for illumination. Really handy when backing up in unfamiliar parking lots and avoiding trees in fields.

  3. carsly

I love the concept – wireless backup camera, no fuss, direct connection to GPS – as a way to quick and easily get a backup camera installed on my small sedan (BMW 3 series).

    Well…

I went with a recommended GPS unit – the Drivesmart 55 – as the 55/65 are supposedly the only models as I write this in Jan 2020 that support high resolution with this backup camera. Got it installed, adjusted, etc. just fine. Popped in two brand new, fully charged, rechargeable Eneloop AA’s and sure enough I managed to get it connected to the GPS with a little fuss. That’s the good part.

The rub is that the camera doesn’t always connect when you power on the car (GPS automatically fires up and looks for camera). Sometimes it’s pretty quick, just 10-15 seconds, and other times it will never connect – even after 5 minutes. For a backup camera, that’s pretty frustrating and highly unreliable. Keep in mind this is in the first three days with a fully charged set of batteries. I shudder to think what a few months of weather and lower charge are going to bring me. Also there is nothing holding this camera to the mount other than two plastic end clips that ‘snap’ in. Nothing to twist or lock. I’ve ordered some industrial velcro strips that I’m going to use to provide extra grip, otherwise it’s likely this will fly off your car.

TL;DR love the concept, camera connection is inconsistent and while the mounting bracket is sturdy behind your license plate there are only two small plastic snap clips holding the expensive part (camera) to the cheap, sturdy part (mounting bracket). Don’t expect to use this as a reliable replacement for a wired backup camera solution. Overpriced for what it is.

  4. Daniel

This camera has a very good field of view (170 degrees), and it is very easy to install (no wires, just batteries). It pairs very easily with a Garmin GPS. I have been using regular alkaline batteries for almost a month now, and the camera still works. I bought lithium batteries but haven’t put them in yet because the alkaline batteries are still doing fine.

  5. Kathleen

This was simple to set up and to connect to the new Garmin. Love it for the safety it provides.

  6. MRTRUMP

I’ll start off with, I don’t have a Back-Up Camera on my SUV. I already had the Garmin GPS for seeing where I’m going & this BC 40 Back-Up camera is the perfect solution for seeing where I’ve been or what I’m about to back into. Easy setup with automatic recognition by the Garmin GPS & just had to add it to the license plate frame, DONE!

  7. Helicopter375

Worked great , unpackaged and set it up, little issue with my internet, has an excellent picture.

  8. Kelly

Nice to have a backup camera on my van. Just wish there was some kind of lock, when you go to a store or any wear anyone could walk by and take it off. so I take it off each time.

  9. Cdburgerjr

I already have the Garmin DriveSmart 65 so this was a natural add on. A perfect solution would be aftermarket dash display and wired camera, but this is very good second choice. I was afraid that the radio signal would be poor, but it has worked out great. The picture is great, especially on the 6.5” screen. It was easy to install, just mount it behind the license plate. I will say the 1996 Jeep Cherokee and 2009 Camry are little on the tight side with the plate recess, but it mounted well. I would have liked to mount it above the plate, but the mount allows you to put it above the top or or front of the top of the license plate.

I deducted a star because the GPS doesn’t always connect. I realize it’s the vagaries of radio connection, but every once in a while, and it always seems like when you really need it to in a strange place, it decides that it won’t connect. The “wait” indicator just spins until it declares it can’t connect, check batteries, etc. The next time I turn the car on (where power on default is to connect to camera), it always works just fine. It is not enough of a problem that I regret buying it.

I have had it 5 months and changed the batteries once. It is on it’s second set of batteries now (and driving much less due to COVID-19.)

It works well and I’m glad I bought it.

  10. Drew

I have always been a Garmin fan. When they came out with a backup camera I immediately ordered one. I am using it on my second vehicle now.

  11. JOFERGAL

Really not helpful as a backup camera. Not a clear and close image and the batteries just last 5 days

  12. Robert

I paired with a new Garmin DriveSmart 55. Vehicle is a 2005 Toyota Tacoma extended cab. Distance to rear of vehicle is about 12 feet. Sporadic connection. Doesn’t work most of the time. I moved the camera from the license plate to the top of the tailgate so it would have an unobstructed line of path to the GPS. Still doesn’t work very well. Re-paired several times hoping it would improve. Don’t waste you money on this piece of junk.

  13. hola

I like the camera but wished the resolution was better

  14. hockeydad

Really love this backup camera. I have an older Acura with no back up camera, added a Garmin GPS with hands free phone capabilities and then added this back up camera. It even shows you when to replace batteries.

  15. VKAZ

Works ok so far. Wasn’t stolen yet, I attached it to the plate with additional Velcro loops to prevent loss. Works great with garmin drive smart 55. Using lithium aa batteries

  16. TSutra

Great solution for people who dont want to cut car wiring

  17. GizmoGuy

I installed it on my sedan. The GPS unit sits on the dash, left of the driver. I only get the camera working 1 out of 5 times. Rest of the times I would get a time out.
The camera itlself sticks out like a sour thumb. It is heavy because of the batteries and is held in place by a cheap plastic snapping mechanism that I am sure will break in less than 6 months. Or it might snap off if you slam close the trunk.
    Complete garbage.

  18. Kyrjus

Back up camera is pretty amazing!! My husband loves it!!

  19. Unknown

Excellent product and the install work was prompt and professional. The customer service could not have been better!

  20. Jimmy

RANGE RANGE RANGE I had a 20′ trailer and a Tahoe, I could connect all the way up to the rear passenger door but as soon as got to the driver’s door, that was it! You’d think they could have boosted the strength at least another 10-15′. IF you want it for a car/SUV, not a bad choice, decent picture and linked w/Garmin GPS

  21. Danny

Great camera! Easy install. Now I need another one for my truck!

  22. user

Not recommend is not secure mine got stolen after 5 weeks

  23. Good4PS4

I don’t like the ease of removing it. I think Garmin could have made it more secure from theft. That said, it was easy to set up and connects every time with a clear image.

  24. Angel

    Its great……………………………………………………

  25. Klinz

The camera is easy to install, works good as a backup camera, but I returned because it would be easy to steal, because of how it just clips into the holder.

  26. Kjtr

Screen quality is surprisingly good. Wireless range is over 30′!

  27. kperlow

Works GREAT with the GPS I purchased at the same time.

  28. Soot

I feel Garmin took a step back with this camera it’s battery operation and it doesn’t have true perimeters when backing up

  29. jlk1234

Installation was not what I expected for my car and the configuration was confusing. I returned it.

  30. Tom001

Works like the factory one in my other truck great addition to gps

  31. StarlaEngland

This was put on my jeep and it works just as good as those that come with a vehicle. The installation was done fast and I have not had any issues since we got it

  32. BC40camerabestsolution

Added the BC40 to my newly purchased Garmin 6.9 GPS after I found out during the setup that the two were compatible. The Bluetooth configuration paired up easily. The key advantage was that it saved needing another monitor to received rear-view vision. A nice feature is that every time the car powers up the monitor comes on and as soon as the car starts moving forward the GPS switches on. there is an icon in the upper right corner to turn the monitor on any time or just say “video on” and everything works. Nice solution. Also, no wires, just 2 AA batteries in the camera housing the last up to 3 months. No big deal.

  33. Unknown

I am very happy with this back up camera I highly recommend this

  34. Delmar

JUNK! Will not work with new Garmin DriveSmart GPS!

  35. GarminBackup

Backup camera pairs/syncs well with Garmin gps.
Regular AA batteries barely last a week. Lithium batteries are better and definitely expensive. Guidelines are a great assistance backing up.

  36. sudsupcarpetcleaning

Love it! Easy set up, works great and is very helpful when backing up in my work vehicle

  37. mduncan192307

Easy to install, but the lines on the screen take up a lot of space

  38. Fordman

This is the second BC 40 wireless back up camera for me I got the first one over 3 years ago and it still works great on my truck this one is for my trailer

  39. BEEZER

Fantastic backup camera. Works great for the back of my Vette that I cannot see behind. Great clarity on the GPS that it is paired to. Easy to install.

  40. SergioM

Backup camera works great. Best of all no wires or drilling. Gives my car some added functionality!

  41. Chief

Best accessory I ever found for my Dodge Journey. It just works!

  42. Andy

No problems with my Toyota Tundra. Worked as intended. A little getting used to the picture because objects look further away than they are.

  43. Tripp

no range it cant reach the back of my single cab pickup truck

  44. JohnS

The camera itself works great with a compatible Garmin receiver. The way it attaches to the license plate holder is the problem! The attachment points are made of plastic. The camera just clips into the plastic ends. Anyone can easily remove the camera. That’s the weakness! We used wide plastic zip ties from behind, to secure the camera and prevent its possible theft. There are currently no Garmin, or any other for that matter, aftermarket products to prevent the easy theft of the camera. Any machinist who is willing to design and build a good quality security cage, stainless or powder coated steel, or quality aluminum, would have a niche market for such a product! Creating a quality anti-theft security cage would also likely increase the sale of this product because theft of the camera is the biggest issue commonly identified by purchasers.

  45. TestEngineer

I don’t recommend. We had one that lasted a little over a year. It went through 3 sets of batteries and then just died. Likely not heat resistant enough for Georgia summers OR not able to withstand the jarring of being mounted on a back hatch on our Explorer. I expected better from Garmin as I have many GPS’s starting in the late 80’s including the HUD accessory from 2013. This is my first serious clunker product from them.

  46. user185239

It’s terrific. Works like a charm and is easy to install

  47. JNick

Once this is calibrated, it makes reversing easier. I have an older vehicle without a factory backup camera. Due to the shape of the truck, it is hard to gauge how close the trailer hitch is to any unsuspecting obstacle. My apologies to the tree and fence post. This paired easily to my Garmin GPS and the calibration was a breeze, using the app. I should’ve bought this sooner. Again, my apologies to the tree and fence post.

  48. Monte

Iam very satisfied with the purchase of this product.

  49. Jept

It’s user friendly if you know what Garmin gps to paired with, easy to set up . My only complaint is, I have to take it out every time I park it because even an 8 year old boy can take it from the base in your car license plate, and bye bye your $100 plus dollars. I will figure out someday what I will make to secure it that at least somebody who wants to take it will need a screwdriver or a pliers to remove it from my plate number.

  50. RustyW

It works excellent with my Garmin. GPS has a great picture.
